Oquvchi

O‘quvchi is a learner or student in Uzbek, referring to a person who is studying or receiving instruction. The term is used across educational settings, from primary and secondary schools to vocational institutes and adult education programs. In higher education, the more specific term for a university student is talaba, while o‘quvchi remains a general label for someone who learns. The word is gender-neutral and can apply to pupils, students in courses, or trainees in various learning contexts.

Etymology: The word comes from the Uzbek verb o‘qish/o‘qimoq meaning “to read” or “to study,” plus the agent noun suffix -chi, yielding “one who studies” or “a learner.” The standard spelling in Uzbek is o‘quvchi; in transliteration or without diacritics it may appear as oquvchi. The plural form is o‘quvchilar.

Usage notes: In everyday Uzbek, o‘quvchi refers to students in schools, apprentices in training programs, or learners in courses. In some contexts, especially historical or regional usage, shogird may be used for a craft or trade learner, while talaba specifically denotes a university student.
