Opintotuen

Opintotuki is a Finnish term referring to financial aid for students pursuing education. It is administered by Kela, the Social Insurance Institution of Finland. The system is designed to help students cover living expenses while they study, making higher education more accessible.

There are two main components to opintotuki: the student grant (opintoraha) and the state-guaranteed student loan guarantee (valtiontakauksella haettava opintolaina). The student grant is a monthly payment that does not need to be repaid, provided the student meets certain academic progress requirements. The amount of the grant depends on factors such as the student's age and whether they are living independently.

The student loan guarantee allows students to apply for a loan from a bank, with the state guaranteeing repayment. This loan is intended to supplement the student grant and help cover larger expenses. Interest accrues on the loan, and it must be repaid after studies are completed.

Eligibility for opintotuki is primarily based on the student's enrollment in an approved educational program, their financial situation, and their nationality or residency status. Students must also demonstrate sufficient progress in their studies to continue receiving the financial aid. The aim of opintotuki is to ensure that financial circumstances do not prevent Finnish citizens and residents from pursuing higher education.
