Operatsioonipõletik

Operatsioonipõletik, also known as surgical site infection (SSI), is an infection that occurs in the incision made during a surgical procedure. These infections can affect the skin, underlying tissues, or organs involved in the surgery. The severity of operatsioonipõletik can range from mild, superficial infections that are easily treated with antibiotics, to severe, deep infections that may require further surgery and prolonged hospitalization.

Risk factors for developing operatsioonipõletik include the type of surgery performed, the length of the procedure, the patient's overall health status, the presence of underlying medical conditions such as diabetes, and factors related to surgical technique and wound care. The microorganisms responsible for these infections are typically bacteria that are normally present on the skin or in the environment.

Symptoms of operatsioonipõletik can include redness, swelling, pain, warmth at the surgical site, and discharge of pus. Fever and chills may also be present. Early detection and treatment are crucial to prevent complications. Diagnosis is usually made based on clinical examination and sometimes through laboratory tests such as wound cultures.

Prevention strategies are a key focus in minimizing the incidence of operatsioonipõletik. These include meticulous sterile techniques during surgery, appropriate use of antibiotics before, during, and after the procedure, and proper wound care post-operatively. Patient education on recognizing signs of infection and seeking prompt medical attention is also important. Treatment typically involves antibiotics and, in some cases, surgical drainage or debridement of infected tissue.
