The Operator Product is a fundamental concept in quantum field theory and related areas of mathematical physics. It is a way to define the product of two operators at the same spacetime point, which can otherwise lead to ill-defined or divergent quantities. The operator product expansion (OPE) provides a systematic method to understand the behavior of such products in the limit where the spacetime points become close to each other.

Essentially, the OPE states that the product of two operators, when their spacetime arguments approach each other, can be expressed as a sum of local operators, each multiplied by a coefficient function that depends on the difference between the spacetime points. These coefficient functions, often called Wilson coefficients or C-numbers, capture the non-local behavior of the original operator product. The local operators appearing in the expansion are typically members of a specific set of operators that are allowed in the theory.

The OPE is a powerful tool for several reasons. It allows for the regularization of divergences that arise from products of operators at coincident points.
