OpenWave Systems was a software company that provided messaging and mobile data solutions. Founded in 1993 as Epicentric, Inc., it was acquired by Vignette Corporation in 2001 and later emerged as OpenWave Systems in 2001. The company was known for its mobile gateway technology, which enabled mobile operators to deliver advanced services like email, web browsing, and multimedia messaging to subscribers.

OpenWave's core offerings included their Unified Messaging platform, which consolidated various communication channels into a single inbox, and their Mobile Browser, which allowed users to access the internet on their mobile devices. They also developed solutions for content delivery, mobile advertising, and customer relationship management for mobile carriers. The company played a significant role in the early development of the mobile internet and the adoption of mobile data services.

In 2012, OpenWave Systems was acquired by Unwired Planet, which was later renamed to Openwave Mobility. This acquisition marked a shift in focus for the company, with OpenWave Mobility concentrating on mobile data optimization, advertising, and messaging solutions for mobile operators. The original OpenWave Systems ceased to exist as an independent entity following these corporate changes.
