Oosterkerkvaart

Oosterkerkvaart is a polder and a former municipality in the province of North Holland, Netherlands. It is located in the municipality of Waterland, north of Amsterdam.

Historically, Oosterkerkvaart was a small agricultural community. The name "Oosterkerkvaart" translates to "East Church Canal," likely referring to a canal that once served a church in the eastern part of the area. Like many polders in the region, its existence is a result of land reclamation efforts, transforming marshland into arable land through drainage and the construction of dikes and canals.

The area primarily consists of meadows and farms, typical of the Dutch countryside. Its proximity to Amsterdam meant that it remained a rural enclave despite the urban expansion around it. In 1991, Oosterkerkvaart, along with several other small municipalities, was merged into the larger municipality of Waterland as part of a provincial administrative reorganization. Today, it functions as a rural district within Waterland, maintaining its agricultural character. There are no significant urban centers or major tourist attractions within Oosterkerkvaart itself, but its landscape is representative of the historical land use and water management practices that define much of the Dutch province of North Holland.
