Ontologytermen

Ontologytermen are the individual elements that populate an ontology. In philosophy, ontology studies the nature of being and the categories of existence, using terms such as entity, object, property, and relation. In information science and the semantic web, ontology terms refer to the defined concepts, properties, individuals, and relations that constitute a formal representation of a domain and its meaning.

A typical set of ontology terms includes classes (concepts), properties (relationships between concepts), and individuals (instances). Each term often carries metadata such as a unique identifier (IRI), a preferred label, definitions, synonyms, and examples, along with notes on its scope and usage. The terms are organized into hierarchies and networks using relations like subclassOf (a is a subclass of b) and partOf (a is part of b), and other structural links such as equivalence or disjointness. In description logics and OWL, terms may have characteristics (for example, functional, transitive, or inverseOf) that affect how inferences are drawn.

Ontology terms are used to annotate data, enable interoperability between systems, support knowledge integration, and power automated reasoning and natural language processing. They allow machines to infer new facts from stated ones, check consistency, and align concepts across datasets. For example, in a medical ontology, terms such as Patient, Disease, Symptom, and Treatment form a vocabulary that supports querying and reasoning about patient care.

The term ontology originates in philosophy but in computer science denotes the explicit, formalization of a domain’s conceptualization, intended to be shared and reused across applications.
