Ontogenia
Ontogenia, or ontogeny, refers to the development of an individual organism from fertilization through its maturity and, in many cases, senescence. It encompasses prenatal development, embryology, postembryonic growth, and, in some species, metamorphosis. The study draws on genetics, cell biology, and ecology to explain how genotype interacts with environment to produce a functional, adult organism.
