Ontogenia

Ontogenia, or ontogeny, refers to the development of an individual organism from fertilization through its maturity and, in many cases, senescence. It encompasses prenatal development, embryology, postembryonic growth, and, in some species, metamorphosis. The study draws on genetics, cell biology, and ecology to explain how genotype interacts with environment to produce a functional, adult organism.

Development proceeds through stages such as zygote, embryo, fetus, larva, juvenile, and adult in various lineages. Key processes include cell division, differentiation, morphogenesis, and organogenesis, as well as growth, aging, and plastic responses to environmental cues. Mechanisms include gene regulatory networks, epigenetic modifications, signaling pathways, maternal contributions, and environmental factors like nutrition and temperature.

Ontogeny is contrasted with phylogeny, the history of evolutionary change in a lineage. The once-popular idea that ontogeny recapitulates phylogeny (the notion that development replays evolutionary history) is now viewed as oversimplified; many species show conserved developmental stages, but development is influenced by selective pressures and modular repurposing of existing structures.

The concept is central to developmental biology, embryology, and related fields. It informs medicine, toxicology, and evolutionary biology and has cross-disciplinary uses in zoology, botany, and paleontology. In broader terms, ontogeny describes how an individual’s form and physiology emerge from its genes and environment across its life cycle.
