Omheftning

Omheftning is a term used in publishing and library science to describe the binding of a book in a softcover format, typically by gluing the pages along the spine. The resulting edition is usually referred to as an omhæftet udgave, or a paperback edition. The term is common in Danish, and it denotes a transition from a previous binding type, such as a hardback, to a more economical, mass-market binding.

In practice, omhæftning involves placing the text block in a flexible paper cover and securing it with adhesive along the spine, a binding method known in English as perfect binding. The interior pages are often the same as in the original edition, though layout or pagination may be adjusted to fit the new format. The cover is designed to be thinner and lighter, which lowers production costs and makes distribution easier. Bibliographic catalogs typically treat an omhæftet edition as a separate manifestation or edition, often with its own ISBN and edition statement.

Omhæftning is widely used for reissuing titles in a more affordable form, for magazines and periodicals, and for distributing mass-market versions of books. It contrasts with hardback bindings, saddle-stitched or staple bindings, and spiral bindings. While more economical, softcover bindings may be less durable than hardcover bindings, influencing decisions about longevity and use in libraries or schools.
