The name is usually explained in-universe as derived from a combination of a root meaning 'omni' or 'om-' and 'dust' or 'stel' meaning star; several writers note its etymology reflects its luminescent, star-like properties.

In most sources, omadustel forms in high-temperature hydrothermal environments and deep metamorphic belts where silica-rich fluids interact with metal-bearing rocks. Deposits are typically described as vein-like nodules within quartz, sometimes with magnetite halos.

Described as a translucent to transparent mineral with a bluish-violet to indigo hue; crystal system is hexagonal; Mohs hardness 6.5–7; refractive index around 1.70; exhibits strong luminescence under ultraviolet light and a subtle metallic luster. The composition is stated as a silicate-oxide with variable transition-metal content, leading to color variation by trace elements.
