Oljeluft

Oljeluft is a term used in Norwegian to describe air that contains oil vapors or oil mist produced by lubrication systems, cutting fluids, and related industrial processes. It is primarily used in occupational health, industrial hygiene, and workplace safety to characterize air quality in facilities where oil-based lubricants or fluids are used. The term is descriptive rather than a formal scientific designation.

Causes and characteristics. Oljeluft originates from mechanical equipment such as hydraulic systems, gearboxes, compressors, and machine tools that use circulating oil or generate aerosols from fluids. It can also result from leaks, splashes, or inadequate containment of oil and its vapors. Oil mist consists of tiny droplets suspended in air, with particle sizes typically in the submicrometer to a few micrometers range, enabling spread through workspaces and ventilation systems. The composition depends on the oil or fluid used and any additives.

Health and safety considerations. Exposure to oil mist and oil-laden air can cause irritation of the eyes, nose, and throat and may lead to respiratory symptoms with prolonged or high-level exposure. The health impact depends on the oil type, viscosity, aerosol size distribution, and exposure duration. Regulatory bodies in many countries set occupational exposure limits for mineral oil mists, and measurements are conducted using gravimetric or optical methods. Preventive measures emphasize source control, proper ventilation, regular maintenance of seals and filtration systems, oil mist collection devices, and appropriate personal protective equipment.
