The term oligomer itself is derived from the Greek words "oligos" meaning few and "meros" meaning parts.

In chemistry and materials science, substances can exist in oligomeric forms. For example, certain synthetic polymers are intentionally produced as oligomers for specific applications. These applications can include use as plasticizers, lubricants, or as building blocks for larger polymers. The properties of an oligomer are generally intermediate between those of the corresponding monomer and polymer. As the number of repeating units increases, the molecular weight increases, often leading to changes in physical properties such as viscosity, melting point, and solubility.

The characterization of oligomeric species often involves techniques like mass spectrometry and gel permeation chromatography to determine the molecular weight distribution and the number of repeating units. Understanding the formation and behavior of oligomers is crucial in polymerization processes, where controlling the degree of polymerization is essential for achieving desired material properties. In biological contexts, short chains of repeating units, such as short peptides or oligonucleotides, are also considered oligomers.
