Olfactometrieverfahren, often translated as olfactometry or odor measurement, refers to a set of standardized methods used to objectively quantify and characterize odors. These methods are crucial in various fields, including environmental science, industrial hygiene, and product development, to assess the strength and hedonic tone of odors. The primary goal is to move beyond subjective perception and provide reproducible, measurable data.

The most common olfactometry technique is dynamic olfactometry. In this process, a panel of trained human observers, known as odor panelists, are exposed to a diluted odor sample. They then indicate whether they can detect an odor compared to a blank sample. The dilution factor at which the odor is first detected is recorded, and this value is used to calculate the odor concentration, typically expressed in odor units per cubic meter (ou/m³). This method accounts for the human nose as the sensor, acknowledging that odor perception is a complex biological process.

Static olfactometry is another approach, though less common in standardized measurements. It involves exposing panelists to odor samples in a contained environment without active dilution. However, dynamic olfactometry is generally preferred for its ability to control dilution ratios precisely and its wider acceptance in regulatory frameworks.

Olfactometry is applied to assess odor emissions from sources like wastewater treatment plants, composting facilities, and agricultural operations. It also plays a role in evaluating the odor of consumer products such as perfumes, detergents, and food items, aiding in quality control and product formulation.
