Oksüdatsioonivormis is a term used in chemistry to describe the state of an atom within a molecule or ion that indicates the degree of oxidation it has undergone. It is a bookkeeping method to track the hypothetical charge an atom would have if all its bonds to atoms of different elements were completely ionic. It is not the actual charge, but rather a useful tool for understanding chemical reactions, particularly redox reactions.

The oxidation state is represented by an integer, which can be positive, negative, or zero. For elements in their elemental form, the oxidation state is always zero. For ions, the oxidation state is equal to the charge of the ion. For compounds, the oxidation states are assigned based on a set of rules. For instance, oxygen typically has an oxidation state of -2, except in peroxides where it is -1, and when bonded to fluorine. Hydrogen usually has an oxidation state of +1 when bonded to nonmetals and -1 when bonded to metals. The sum of the oxidation states of all atoms in a neutral molecule is zero, and in a polyatomic ion, it equals the charge of the ion.

Understanding oxidation states is crucial for balancing redox equations and predicting the products of chemical reactions.
