Oksitosiinin

Oksitosiini is a peptide hormone and neurotransmitter produced in the hypothalamus and released by the posterior pituitary gland. It is composed of nine amino acids. Often referred to as the "love hormone" or "bonding hormone," oxytocin plays a crucial role in social bonding, reproduction, and childbirth.

During childbirth, oxytocin stimulates uterine contractions, facilitating labor and delivery. After birth, it stimulates the release of breast milk, a process known as milk ejection reflex, which is essential for breastfeeding. Oxytocin is also vital for maternal bonding with the infant.

Beyond its reproductive functions, oxytocin is involved in various social behaviors. It promotes feelings of trust, empathy, and generosity, contributing to the formation and maintenance of social relationships. It is released during social interactions, such as hugging, eye contact, and intimacy, reinforcing positive social connections. Oxytocin's influence extends to stress reduction and anxiety management, as it can counteract the effects of stress hormones like cortisol. Research continues to explore its potential therapeutic applications for conditions involving social deficits and anxiety.
