Okinawan Japanese refers to the dialects of the Japanese language spoken in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan. These dialects are part of the Ryukyuan language family, which are distinct from mainland Japanese dialects, though they are mutually intelligible to varying degrees with standard Japanese. Historically, Okinawan languages were separate languages, but due to increased contact and education in standard Japanese, many Okinawan languages have become endangered, with younger generations increasingly using standard Japanese.

The Ryukyuan languages are believed to have diverged from the Japonic languages around the 3rd to 5th centuries CE. Over centuries, these languages developed independently on the Ryukyu Islands, leading to significant differences in pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar compared to mainland Japanese. For instance, the word for "thank you" in standard Japanese is arigatou, while in Okinawan it might be nankurunaisa, though this phrase is more commonly understood as a proverb.

While standard Japanese is the official language and widely used for education and media, Okinawan dialects persist, particularly among older generations and in rural areas. There are ongoing efforts to preserve and revitalize Okinawan languages through cultural events, educational programs, and media. However, the continued dominance of standard Japanese poses a challenge to the survival of these unique linguistic heritage.
