Ogranienian

Ogranienian is a hypothetical geological period and epoch proposed by some geologists, though it is not officially recognized by the International Commission on Stratigraphy (ICS) as part of the Geologic Time Scale. The term "Ogranienian" has been used in informal discussions and some regional studies to describe a span of time characterized by specific geological formations and fossil assemblages found in certain parts of the world, particularly within Eastern Europe.

The proposed Ogranienian period is often associated with transitional geological conditions between established epochs. Its proponents suggest that it represents a distinct phase of sedimentation, volcanic activity, or faunal change that warrants separate classification. However, the lack of widespread, consistent evidence across multiple continents and the challenges in precisely correlating rock layers have hindered its formal acceptance.

Geologists typically rely on global stratigraphic standards established by the ICS, which are based on meticulously studied reference sections called Global Boundary Stratotype Sections and Points (GSSPs). Until the criteria for defining the Ogranienian are met with broad international consensus and rigorous evidence, it will remain an informal designation used primarily in localized research contexts.
