Oero

Oero is a civil parish (freguesia) within the municipality of Arouca, in the district of Porto, Portugal. The parish occupies an area of approximately 10.5 square kilometres and, according to the 2021 census, has a population of around 1,200 residents. Situated in the rolling foothills of the Serra da Estrela mountain range, Oero is characterised by gently undulating terrain, with a mix of small valleys and forested slopes.

The name Oero is believed to derive from the Latin term “Orius,” historically linked to local iron mining activities that date back to the late 19th century. The discovery of rich iron ore deposits in the early 1800s led to a brief period of industrialisation in the area, during which several small smelting plants were established. Although the mining sector has since declined, its legacy remains visible in the region’s traditional architecture and the abandoned mine sites that are now considered historical landmarks.

Today, Oero’s economy is primarily based on agriculture, forestry, and increasingly, rural tourism. The parish hosts several small family farms that cultivate chestnuts, berries, and livestock. Local traditions include annual festivals celebrating the chestnut harvest and the patron saint of the parish church, which dates back to the 18th century. Hiking trails that cross the Serra da Estrela provide visitors with scenic views of the northern Portuguese countryside, and the area is frequently promoted as a destination for eco‑tourism within the broader Arouca municipality.
