Odczasownikowy

Odczasownikowy is a term used in Polish linguistics to describe words whose primary base is a verb. The label emphasizes the derivational path from a verb to another part of speech, most often nouns and adjectives. Rzeczowniki odczasownikowe (deverbal nouns) are common in Polish. They include agents and actions formed from verbs, such as pisarz (writer) from pisać, with the agent suffix -arz; czytelnik (reader) from czytać, with the suffix -nik; gotowanie (cooking) from gotować with -anie; and pisanie (writing) from pisać with -anie. These nouns retain a clear connection to the original verb and denote either an activity, an agent, or a process.

Przymiotniki odczasownikowe (deverbal adjectives) encompass adjectives derived from verbs as well. In many cases, these are realized as participles that function as adjectives, for example czytany (read/being read) or pisany (written). Such forms describe properties related to the action expressed by the verb. Polish also has other deverbal adjectives formed with productive suffixes, though participial forms are the most common among everyday usages.
