Octasubstituted is a descriptive term used in chemistry to indicate that eight substituent groups are present at defined positions on a parent molecular framework, replacing eight hydrogen atoms or other ligands. The designation is relative to the chosen core structure; different scaffolds offer different numbers of substitution positions, and an octasubstituted designation only applies when eight such sites have been occupied.

In practice, octasubstitution is more common for complex or polycyclic frameworks and organometallic systems than for simple rings. For example, in ferrocene and related metallocenes, the two cyclopentadienyl rings provide multiple substitution sites, and researchers may describe derivatives as octasubstituted when eight substituents are installed across the rings. Similarly, polycyclic arenes, cage compounds, or heavily substituted alkanes can be described as octasubstituted when eight positions bear substituents.

It is important to note that octasubstitution is not applicable to all parent structures. A benzene ring, for instance, has only six positions and cannot be octasubstituted in the traditional sense; the term would instead refer to more complex systems that extend beyond a single six-membered ring. When used, the term may be combined with locants and substituent identities in IUPAC-style descriptions to specify which positions are occupied and by what groups.

In synthetic chemistry, achieving octasubstitution often requires multiple steps, selective activation of specific positions, and often protecting-group strategies or iterative coupling methods to control regiochemistry and stereochemistry.
