Oceanário
Oceanário de Lisboa, commonly referred to as Oceanário, is a public aquarium in Lisbon, Portugal. Opened in 1998 as part of Expo '98, it is located in the Parque das Nações district along the Tagus River and near the Oriente transport hub. The facility is one of Europe’s largest indoor aquariums and is built around a large central tank that recreates an open-ocean environment, with surrounding galleries that illustrate marine habitats from around the world. The collection comprises thousands of animals representing hundreds of species, including fish, invertebrates, and other marine life. The exhibits emphasize biodiversity and the connections between ecosystems, with emphasis on conservation, research, and environmental education. The Oceanário offers educational programs for schools, guided tours, and public outreach activities, and collaborates with scientific institutions on marine research. The building is noted for its contemporary architecture and the way the main tank anchors the visitor experience. As a major tourist and educational venue, Oceanário de Lisboa is widely recognized as a symbol of Lisbon’s Expo 98 redevelopment and a leading example of how modern aquariums can combine conservation messaging with public engagement.
