Oceanborne

Oceanborne refers to a condition or disease transmitted through or originating from the ocean. This concept can encompass several related ideas, including the transmission of pathogens to humans or animals via seawater or marine organisms, or the movement of biological material, such as spores or larvae, across oceanic distances.

In the context of human health, oceanborne diseases can arise from exposure to contaminated seawater, often due to pollution or natural phenomena. Examples include infections caused by bacteria like Vibrio vulnificus, which can enter the body through open wounds or by consuming contaminated shellfish. Algal blooms, sometimes referred to as red tides, can also produce toxins that accumulate in seafood, posing a risk to consumers and leading to various illnesses.

The term can also describe the dispersal of organisms or their genetic material across oceans. This oceanic transport is a significant factor in biogeography and the distribution of species. For instance, oceanic currents can carry plankton, fish larvae, and even larger organisms over vast distances, influencing the biodiversity of marine ecosystems and the colonization of new habitats.
