Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is an American politician and member of the United States House of Representatives. Born on October 13, 1989, in the Bronx, New York, she rose to prominence in 2018 as a Democratic candidate for the 14th congressional district, which covers parts of the Bronx and Queens.

Ocasio-Cortez's background is rooted in social activism and community organizing. She graduated from Boston University in 2011 with a degree in international relations and economics. Prior to entering politics, she worked as a waitress, barista, and on her parents' food truck, and was also an organizer for the Sanders 2016 presidential campaign.

In 2018, Ocasio-Cortez won the Democratic primary for the 14th congressional district, defeating incumbent Representative Joseph Crowley in a surprising upset.
