Observerdistance

Observerdistance is a term used in visual studies, photography, film, and computer graphics to describe the physical distance between an observer and the object or scene being observed. It affects perceived scale, depth, detail, and the strength of perspective cues.

In art, photography, and cinematography, the observer distance interacts with lens focal length to shape perspective and composition. Short distances emphasize depth and produce dramatic, foreshortened views; long distances reduce angular size and yield a flatter, more telephoto look.

In computer graphics and 3D rendering, the concept is represented by the camera position relative to the scene. The observer distance, together with the field of view, determines what portion of the scene is rendered and how objects project on the image plane. A greater distance can change scale relationships and depth perception in the rendered image.

In human perception, distance influences acuity and spatial judgment because objects subtend a certain visual angle that depends on both size and distance. For small angles, the angular size is approximately the real size divided by distance.

Practical note: in photography, changing the observer distance while holding the camera setup constant alters the apparent size of subjects and the perspective compression. In rendering, distance is a key parameter for camera transforms and is inseparable from concepts such as focal length and field of view.
