Oblatory

Oblatory is an adjective used to describe something related to an oblation or offering, especially within religious or ritual contexts. In historical or scholarly texts, it may modify rites, objects, or acts designated as offerings to a deity, spirit, or sacred entity. The term is rare in modern English; more common synonyms are oblation, offering, or sacrificial.

Etymology and usage: Oblatory derives from Latin oblatio, meaning an offering, from ob- “toward” + ferre “to bear.” In English, oblatory appeared in medieval and early modern writings to describe liturgical practices and temple rites. Its usage has diminished in contemporary scholarship, where explicit references to oblation or offering are typically preferred.

Contexts and examples: Oblatory appears in discussions of ancient religious practices, including Near Eastern, Jewish, or Christian rituals, when the emphasis is on the act of offering itself. It can be found in phrases such as “oblatory rites,” “oblatory vessels,” or “oblatory sacrifice,” though such formations are uncommon outside specialized literature.

Oblatory should not be confused with obliterate, which shares a different root and meaning.
