Objektiivi

Objektiivi is the Finnish term for the optical lens assembly used in cameras and other imaging instruments. In everyday use it mainly refers to the lens on a camera, but in a broader sense it can describe the objective lens in microscopes and similar devices. The objektiivi is responsible for gathering light, forming an image, and, together with the aperture and focusing mechanism, controlling exposure and sharpness.

In photography, the objektiivi is a key component that determines image characteristics such as field of view, magnification, and depth of field. Its focal length defines how much of the scene is captured and how distant subjects appear. Aperture size affects brightness and depth of field. Modern lenses may include image stabilization, autofocus motors, and diverse optical coatings to reduce reflections and aberrations.

Lenses are commonly categorized by focal length: wide-angle (short focal length, broad field of view), standard (around 50 mm in full-frame terms), telephoto (long focal length, narrow field of view, higher magnification), and macro lenses designed for close-up work. Cameras can have interchangeable lenses or fixed lenses, and the available objektiivi often depends on the camera’s lens mount and ecosystem.

Care and maintenance are important: keep the lens surfaces clean, use a protective filter if desired, and store the lens in a dry, protected case to prevent fungus and dust buildup. Proper handling preserves image quality and longevity of the objektiivi.
