Oberflächenstrom

Oberflächenstrom refers to the flow of water over the land surface. It occurs when precipitation exceeds the infiltration capacity of the soil, meaning the ground cannot absorb the water fast enough. This excess water begins to move downhill, collecting in streams, rivers, and eventually larger bodies of water.

Several factors influence the magnitude and behavior of oberflächenstrom. The intensity and duration of rainfall are primary drivers. Steep slopes promote faster and more substantial surface runoff, while flatter terrain allows water to accumulate and infiltrate more readily. Soil type and its condition also play a significant role; permeable soils like sand allow for greater infiltration, reducing oberflächenstrom, whereas impermeable soils like clay restrict infiltration, leading to increased surface flow. Vegetation cover acts as a natural retardant, intercepting rainfall and slowing down its movement across the surface, thus decreasing erosion and runoff.

It is also a significant factor in soil erosion, as the moving water can dislodge and carry away soil particles.
