Oberflächenaktivität
Oberflächenaktivität refers to the property of certain substances to accumulate at interfaces between different phases, such as liquid-liquid, gas-liquid, or solid-liquid boundaries. These substances are known as surfactants or surface-active agents. Their molecular structure typically consists of a hydrophilic (water-loving) head and a hydrophobic (water-repelling) tail. This amphiphilic nature allows them to orient themselves at interfaces, with the hydrophilic head facing the aqueous phase and the hydrophobic tail facing the non-aqueous phase.
This phenomenon leads to a significant reduction in the surface tension or interfacial tension of the system.
In biology, many essential molecules, like phospholipids that form cell membranes and proteins, exhibit surface activity.
