Oaspete

Oaspete is a small municipality located in the northeastern Italian region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, within the administrative boundaries of the Province of Pordenone. The town spans an area of approximately 7 square kilometres and sits at an elevation of around 200 metres above sea level. As of the most recent census in 2021, Oaspete had a population of roughly 630 residents, giving it a low population density typical of rural settlements in the area.

The origins of Oaspete can be traced back to the medieval period. Historical records indicate that the village was first mentioned in the early 14th century, when it was part of a larger feudal landholding managed by local lords. Over subsequent centuries, the community evolved through various political changes, including incorporation into the Republic of Venice and later the Kingdom of Italy following the unification in the 19th century. The local archives contain references to agricultural practices from the 16th century, notably the cultivation of olives and grapes, which have remained staples of the local economy.

The economy of Oaspete today is largely based on agriculture, with olive groves, vineyards, and small-scale livestock farming constituting the main sources of livelihood. In recent years, the municipality has sought to promote agritourism, capitalising on its scenic surroundings and traditional food production. The village is also noted for its few architectural points of interest, including a 15th-century church dedicated to Saint George, which serves as both a religious and cultural centre for the community. Oaspete’s demographic profile is characterised by an aging population, a common demographic pattern in many rural Italian municipalities, prompting local initiatives aimed at encouraging young families and entrepreneurs to settle in the area.
