OPCOs

OPCOs, or Operating Companies, are business entities that directly engage in the production or sale of goods and services. They represent the core operational activities of a larger corporate structure. In contrast to holding companies, which primarily exist to own assets and investments, OPCOs are the entities that generate revenue through their day-to-day business operations.

These companies are responsible for managing assets, employing staff, and fulfilling customer orders. Their financial performance is a direct reflection of the market demand for their products or services and their efficiency in delivering them. OPCOs are crucial for the economic function of a business, as they are the engines driving its growth and profitability.

Many large corporations are structured with a holding company at the top and several OPCOs beneath it, each specializing in a particular product line, geographical region, or business function. This structure can offer benefits such as risk mitigation, as the liabilities of one OPCO may not directly impact others or the parent holding company. It also allows for greater operational focus and management flexibility within each individual operating unit.
