Nødsignalet

Nødsignalet, often referred to as the "SOS" signal, is a universally recognized Morse code distress signal. It consists of three short signals, three long signals, and then three short signals, transmitted as '... --- ...'. This sequence was officially adopted as an international distress signal in 1906 at the International Radiotelegraph Convention in Berlin.

The SOS signal was chosen for its simplicity and distinctiveness, making it easy to transmit and recognize, even under challenging radio conditions. Prior to its adoption, various distress signals were in use, leading to potential confusion. The SOS sequence is continuous and does not have any discernible meaning as a word or phrase, which aids in its universal recognition.

While commonly associated with maritime use, the SOS signal can be transmitted by any means capable of communication, including flashing lights, sound signals, or even hand gestures. Its primary purpose is to alert others to a dire situation where life or property is in immediate danger and assistance is urgently required. The repetitive nature of the signal also helps to ensure it is not mistaken for ordinary communication. The signal is often followed by details about the nature of the emergency and the location.
