Næringarhringrás, often translated as nutrient cycling or biogeochemical cycling, refers to the pathways by which nutrients are exchanged between the biotic and abiotic components of an ecosystem. This process is fundamental to the sustainability of all life on Earth, as it ensures the continuous availability of essential elements like carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, and water.

In a typical nutrient cycle, nutrients are taken up by producers, such as plants, from the environment. These producers are then consumed by consumers, transferring the nutrients through the food web. Decomposers, like bacteria and fungi, play a crucial role by breaking down dead organic matter from producers and consumers, returning the nutrients to the soil, water, or atmosphere, where they can be reabsorbed by producers, thus completing the cycle.

Each nutrient has its own specific cycle, with unique reservoirs and transformations. For example, the carbon cycle involves processes like photosynthesis, respiration, decomposition, and combustion. The nitrogen cycle is particularly complex, involving nitrification, denitrification, ammonification, and nitrogen fixation.

Human activities can significantly impact these natural cycles. Deforestation, agricultural practices, industrial pollution, and the burning of fossil fuels can alter the balance of nutrient cycles, leading to consequences such as eutrophication of water bodies, soil degradation, and climate change. Understanding and protecting nutrient cycles is therefore vital for maintaining healthy ecosystems and supporting life.
