Näyttämötyyppi, often translated as stage type or acting area, refers to the fundamental architectural configurations of a theatre. These configurations dictate the relationship between the performers and the audience, significantly influencing the staging, performance style, and overall theatrical experience.

The most common näyttämötyyppi is the proscenium stage, characterized by a picture frame opening that separates the audience from the performance space. This creates a clear distinction between the represented world of the play and the reality of the auditorium.

Another prevalent type is the thrust stage, which extends into the audience from the rear, allowing for three-sided seating. This design fosters a more intimate connection between actors and spectators, as performers can engage with audiences on multiple sides.

The arena stage, also known as theatre-in-the-round, places the performance space at the center, with the audience seated in a full circle around it. This configuration offers the highest degree of intimacy and immersive experience, but presents unique challenges in terms of sightlines and scene changes.

Other, less common näyttämötyyppi include the black box theatre, a flexible, often bare room that can be configured in various ways, and the traverse stage, where the audience is seated on two opposite sides, with the performance happening between them. The choice of näyttämötyyppi profoundly impacts every aspect of a theatrical production, from set design and lighting to actor movement and audience perspective.
