Närvipõimikutes, commonly referred to as nerve plexuses in English, are complex networks of interwoven nerves. These structures are formed by the anterior rami of spinal nerves that emerge from the spinal cord. Instead of traveling directly to their target muscles or sensory receptors, these nerve fibers undergo a process of division and recombination within the plexus. This intricate arrangement allows for a more efficient and integrated control over various parts of the body.

There are several major nerve plexuses in the human body, each serving a specific region. The cervical plexus, formed by the ventral rami of spinal nerves C1-C4, innervates the muscles and skin of the neck and parts of the head and shoulders. The brachial plexus, originating from spinal nerves C5-T1, is crucial for the motor and sensory supply of the upper limb, including the shoulder, arm, forearm, and hand. The lumbar plexus, derived from spinal nerves L1-L4, controls the anterior and medial parts of the thigh, as well as the abdominal wall. Finally, the sacral plexus, formed by spinal nerves L4-S4, innervates the posterior thigh, most of the leg and foot, and the pelvic region. The coccygeal plexus is a smaller plexus formed by the coccygeal nerve.

The organization of a nerve plexus ensures that a single muscle or area of skin may receive input from multiple spinal nerve roots. This redundancy provides a degree of resilience; damage to a single spinal nerve root may not completely paralyze the muscles it innervates because other nerve roots contributing to the plexus can still provide signals. Conversely, damage to a nerve within a plexus can affect multiple muscles or skin areas. Understanding the anatomy and function of nerve plexuses is fundamental in neurology and physical therapy for diagnosing and treating various conditions affecting the nervous system and musculoskeletal system.
