Nyirokcsatornakiesés, also known as lymphatic duct obstruction or lymphatic drainage failure, refers to a condition where the flow of lymph fluid within the body's lymphatic system is impaired. The lymphatic system is a crucial network of vessels and nodes that helps remove waste products, toxins, and excess fluid from tissues, playing a vital role in immune function. When lymphatic ducts become blocked or damaged, lymph fluid can accumulate in the surrounding tissues, leading to swelling, a condition known as lymphedema.

The causes of nyirokcsatornakiesés are varied. It can be congenital, meaning present at birth due to malformations of the lymphatic vessels. Acquired causes are more common and can include surgical procedures, particularly those involving lymph node removal (such as in cancer treatment), radiation therapy, infections that damage lymphatic vessels, trauma, or chronic inflammation. Certain medical conditions and parasitic infections like filariasis can also obstruct lymphatic flow.

Symptoms typically include swelling in the affected limb or body part, often starting gradually. The swelling may be accompanied by a feeling of heaviness, tightness, or discomfort. In some cases, the skin may thicken and harden. Recurrent infections in the swollen area are also a common complication, as the impaired lymphatic system struggles to effectively clear bacteria. Diagnosis usually involves a physical examination, medical history, and imaging techniques such as lymphoscintigraphy or ultrasound to assess lymphatic function and identify the extent of the blockage. Treatment focuses on managing lymphedema and preventing complications, often involving decongestive therapy, compression garments, exercise, and proper skin care.
