Nyföddhet refers to the period immediately following birth. It is a critical transition phase for both the infant and the parents. For the baby, this time is characterized by adaptation to life outside the womb, including learning to breathe independently, regulate body temperature, and feed. Visible physical characteristics of a newborn can include a wrinkled or blotchy skin tone, a soft spot on the head called a fontanelle, and an umbilical cord stump that will eventually detach.
