Nyavaran

Nyavaran is a term of significance in certain spiritual and philosophical traditions, particularly those originating from India. It is often translated as "covering," "veiling," or "concealment." In its most common usage, nyavaran refers to the illusory power that obscures the true nature of reality, preventing individuals from perceiving the divine or ultimate truth. This veil is understood to be a product of the mind, conditioned by desires, attachments, and a mistaken identification with the material self.

The concept of nyavaran is central to understanding spiritual liberation or moksha. It is believed that by overcoming nyavaran, one can pierce through the illusion and realize their true spiritual identity, which is often described as being one with the universal consciousness or Brahman. Various practices, such as meditation, devotion (bhakti), and self-inquiry (atma-vichara), are employed as methods to weaken and eventually dissolve this covering.

Different traditions may elaborate on the specific nature and manifestations of nyavaran. For instance, some texts describe it as a combination of ignorance (avidya) and the subtle impressions (samskaras) that perpetuate the cycle of birth and death. The effective removal of nyavaran is seen as the ultimate goal of spiritual endeavor, leading to a state of permanent peace, bliss, and enlightenment.
