Nyamata

Nyamata is a town located in the Bugesera District of Rwanda's Eastern Province. It lies approximately 30 kilometers southeast of the capital city, Kigali. Nyamata serves as the administrative center for Bugesera District. The town is situated in a region characterized by its relatively flat topography and a dry climate.

Historically, Nyamata gained significant international attention due to its role during the 1994 Rwandan Genocide. Nyamata Catholic Church, a prominent landmark in the town, became a site of mass atrocities where thousands of people sought refuge but were subsequently killed. A memorial is now established at the church, preserving the memory of the victims and serving as a place of remembrance.

The economy of Nyamata is primarily based on agriculture, with many residents engaged in farming activities, cultivating crops such as cassava, maize, and beans. The town also has a growing commercial sector, with local markets and small businesses contributing to its economic life. Nyamata is connected to other parts of Rwanda through road networks. The nearby Kigali International Airport provides air transport links. The town's infrastructure includes schools, health centers, and basic services.
