Nxe5

Nxe5 is a chess move in algebraic notation in which a knight captures a piece on the e5 square and lands there. The N indicates a knight; when two knights could reach e5, the originating file or rank is included to disambiguate, resulting in notations such as Nce5 or Nfe5.

In common openings, Nxe5 often occurs when Black has advanced a pawn to e5 and White’s knight captures it. A typical example is 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Nxe5, where White’s knight from f3 takes the pawn on e5. Black may respond 3...Nxe5, recapturing with the knight from c6 to e5. The sequence creates central tension and performance of development for both sides, with the e5 square becoming a focal point for the ensuing middlegame.

Ambiguity considerations are important: if White has two knights that can reach e5, the move must be disambiguated. For instance, if knights sit on c4 and f3, capturing on e5 could be either Nce5 or Nfe5, depending on which knight moves. Proper notation clarifies the origin of the capture.

Strategically, Nxe5 can win a central pawn or test an opponent’s e5 pawn structure and piece coordination. It can lead to favorable exchanges or open lines for other pieces, but it may also expose the attacking knight to counterattacks or rapid development by the opponent.
