Nusayrs

The Nusayrs, also known as Alawites, are an ethnoreligious group primarily found in Syria, Lebanon, Turkey, and parts of Israel. They are adherents of a syncretic branch of Shia Islam. Their beliefs incorporate elements from various religious traditions, including Gnosticism, ancient Mesopotamian religions, and Christianity. A central tenet of Nusayri faith is the belief in the divine nature of Ali ibn Abi Talib, the cousin and son-in-law of the Islamic prophet Muhammad, whom they consider to be an incarnation of God.

Nusayri theology is esoteric and complex, with its core doctrines often kept secret from outsiders and even from less initiated members of their own community. This secrecy has contributed to misunderstandings and sometimes suspicion from other Islamic sects. They have specific rituals and practices that differ from mainstream Islamic traditions, including unique prayer forms and holiday observances.

Historically, the Nusayrs have faced periods of persecution and marginalization. In modern times, they have played a significant role in the political landscape of Syria, with many holding positions of power within the government and military. Their religious identity has often been a point of discussion and analysis in the context of Syrian politics and the ongoing conflict. The term "Alawite" has become more common in recent decades, particularly in media discourse.
