Numéraux, also known as numerals, are symbols or a system of symbols used to represent numbers. They are fundamental to mathematics and everyday life, enabling us to quantify, order, and perform calculations. The most common system in use today is the Hindu-Arabic numeral system, which employs ten distinct digits: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9. This system is positional, meaning the value of a digit depends on its position within a number. For instance, in the number 222, the first '2' represents two hundred, the second '2' represents twenty, and the last '2' represents two.

Historically, various numeral systems have existed. The Roman numeral system, for example, uses letters like I, V, X, L, C, D, and M to represent numbers. While still seen in some contexts like clock faces or outlining chapters, it is less practical for complex calculations due to its additive and subtractive nature rather than a purely positional system. Other ancient cultures developed their own systems, such as Egyptian hieroglyphic numerals or Babylonian cuneiform numerals, each with its unique set of symbols and rules. The development of numerals has been a crucial step in the advancement of human civilization, facilitating trade, science, and abstract thought.
