Nukleotiidijärjestysten, or nucleotide sequences, refer to the specific order in which nucleotide monomers are arranged within a nucleic acid molecule, such as DNA or RNA. Nucleic acids are polymers composed of repeating units called nucleotides. Each nucleotide consists of three components: a nitrogenous base, a five-carbon sugar, and a phosphate group. The nitrogenous bases in DNA are adenine (A), guanine (G), cytosine (C), and thymine (T), while RNA uses uracil (U) instead of thymine.

The sequence of these bases along the nucleic acid backbone is what carries genetic information. In DNA, the sequence of bases dictates the genetic code, which is ultimately responsible for the synthesis of proteins and the regulation of cellular activities. RNA sequences also play crucial roles, including carrying genetic messages from DNA to ribosomes (mRNA), forming structural components of ribosomes (rRNA), and transferring specific amino acids during protein synthesis (tRNA).

Determining nucleotide sequences, a process known as DNA sequencing or RNA sequencing, is a fundamental technique in molecular biology and genetics. It allows scientists to study gene function, identify genetic mutations associated with diseases, understand evolutionary relationships between organisms, and develop new biotechnologies. The accurate determination and analysis of nucleotide sequences are therefore essential for advancing our understanding of life at the molecular level.
