Nukleiinihapposynteesiä, commonly known as nucleic acid synthesis, refers to the biological process by which nucleotides are assembled into nucleic acids, namely deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) and ribonucleic acid (RNA). This fundamental process is essential for all living organisms, underpinning heredity, gene expression, and protein synthesis.

DNA synthesis, or replication, is a semi-conservative process where an existing DNA molecule serves as a template for the creation of two identical daughter DNA molecules. This occurs during cell division to ensure that genetic information is accurately passed on to new cells. Enzymes like DNA polymerase play a crucial role in adding new nucleotides to the growing strand, following base-pairing rules (adenine with thymine, and guanine with cytosine).

RNA synthesis, or transcription, involves the creation of an RNA molecule from a DNA template. This process is the first step in gene expression, where the genetic information encoded in DNA is copied into a messenger RNA (mRNA) molecule. RNA polymerase is the key enzyme, reading the DNA sequence and synthesizing a complementary RNA strand, with uracil replacing thymine. Other types of RNA, such as transfer RNA (tRNA) and ribosomal RNA (rRNA), are also synthesized through similar transcriptional mechanisms, each serving distinct functions in protein synthesis.

The synthesis of both DNA and RNA is a tightly regulated and complex series of enzymatic reactions, ensuring the fidelity and efficiency required for cellular life.
