Nucleialso is a hypothetical term used in speculative biology and in some science fiction narratives to describe a proposed subcellular compartment that combines nucleus-like information storage with metabolism-centered activity, effectively serving as a dual-domain center within a protocell. The name derives from nucleus and the adverbial “also,” signaling its proposed dual function.

In theoretical models, a nucleialso would be a bounded region that either forms a membrane-enclosed compartment or is created by phase separation within the cytoplasm. It would contain genetic material and a set of enzymes enabling transcription-like processing and metabolic reactions, while maintaining communication with surrounding cytosol. The compartment might display selective permeability, dynamic organization, and scaffolding that coordinates replication, repair, and metabolism.

Status and usage: Nucleialso is not established in empirical biology. It appears in discussions about early cellular evolution and in speculative fiction as a device to explore how information storage and metabolic processing could co-evolve in a single structure. Critics note that the idea blurs distinctions between nucleus, nucleoid, and organelles and that there is currently no experimental evidence for such a compartment.
