Notranjska

Notranjska is a historical and geographical region in southwestern Slovenia. It is part of the larger Slovenian Littoral region but is distinguished by its inland karst landscape. The area is characterized by extensive karst formations, including numerous caves, sinkholes, and underground rivers. The most famous karst phenomena in Notranjska are the Postojna Cave and the Škocjan Caves, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

The region is sparsely populated and consists of rolling hills and forests. Agriculture is practiced on the limited arable land, with livestock farming and viticulture being common. Historically, Notranjska was an important area for forestry and mining, particularly for mercury. The administrative center of the region is Postojna.

Notranjska's natural beauty and unique geological features have made it a significant tourist destination. Visitors are drawn to the karst phenomena, as well as to the natural parks and the historic castles scattered throughout the landscape. The region also holds cultural significance, with a rich folklore and traditions that reflect its rural and somewhat isolated character. The economy of Notranjska is increasingly reliant on tourism, alongside traditional agricultural activities and some industrial development in urban centers like Postojna.
