Etymology and usage: The word nosztalgia is a Hungarian adaptation of the international term nostalgia, borrowed from German Nostalgie, with roots in the Greek nostos (“return home”) and algos (“pain”). In modern Hungarian, nosztalgia covers both individual recollection and cultural or historical longing, including interest in past decades, traditional customs, or earlier social conditions.

Psychology: Nostalgia is a complex emotional state that blends longing with affectionate reminiscence. It is not a clinical disorder. It can be triggered by sensory cues such as music, scents, photographs, or familiar places. Research suggests nostalgia can improve mood, enhance perceived social connectedness, and contribute to a sense of meaning, though it can also evoke sadness if the past is experienced as irretrievably lost.
