Nostell

Nostell is a village and civil parish in the Wakefield district of West Yorkshire, England. It is located to the east of the city of Wakefield. The parish includes the hamlets of Ackton and Bell Bank. The name Nostell is thought to derive from the Old English "nos" meaning nose, and "halh" meaning nook or hollow, referring to a geographical feature of the area.

The most prominent feature of Nostell is Nostell Priory, a historic country house that was once a monastic priory. The priory was founded in the 12th century and later became a collegiate church before its dissolution. The present house was built in the 18th century by Robert Adam for the Winn family, who were the principal landowners for centuries. The estate is now owned by the National Trust and is a popular tourist attraction, featuring extensive grounds and gardens.

Historically, Nostell was part of the wapentake of Osgoldcross. The village has a church, St Oswald's, which has medieval origins. The area around Nostell has seen agricultural activity for many years. More recently, the village has become more residential, with some of its population commuting to nearby towns and cities for work. The M1 motorway runs close to the village, providing good transport links. Nostell has a primary school and a small number of local amenities.
