Norðvesturfjórðungur

Norðvesturfjórðungur, meaning Northwest Quarter, is one of the four traditional regions of Iceland. It is located in the northwestern part of the country, bordered by Westfjords to the north and West to the south. The region is characterized by its rugged coastline, deep fjords, and mountainous interior.

Historically, Norðvesturfjórðungur has been sparsely populated, with communities often isolated by the challenging terrain. Fishing and agriculture have been the primary economic activities for centuries. The area is known for its dramatic landscapes, including Húnaflói bay, the Vatnsnes peninsula, and the Snæfellsnes peninsula which is sometimes considered part of the larger northwestern region.

Key settlements within Norðvesturfjórðungur include Akranes, a port town and industrial center, and Borgarnes, a market town situated on the shores of Borgarfjörður. The region is a popular destination for tourists drawn to its natural beauty, opportunities for hiking, birdwatching, and exploring the unique geological features. The presence of historical sites and the country's rich saga heritage also contribute to its appeal. Access to the region is primarily via the Ring Road (Route 1) and various smaller roads that traverse the landscape.
