Nordstjärneorden

The Nordstjärneorden, meaning Order of the Polar Star, is a Swedish royal order of chivalry. It was established in 1748 by King Frederick I of Sweden and is one of Sweden's oldest and most prestigious orders. The order was originally intended to recognize bravery and public service, particularly for those who had demonstrated loyalty and merit to the Swedish crown.

The motto of the Nordstjärneorden is "Nescit occasum," which translates to "It knows no setting," referring to the star itself. This symbolizes the enduring nature of merit and service. The insignia of the order is a white eight-pointed star, representing the traditional eight winds, superimposed on a black Maltese cross. In the center of the star is a blue enameled medallion bearing a crowned "C" for King Carl Gustaf, or formerly the initial of the reigning monarch, surrounded by the order's motto.

The Nordstjärneorden is awarded to Swedish and foreign citizens for personal merit. While historically it recognized military achievements and distinguished civil service, its scope has broadened over time. Membership is generally conferred for outstanding contributions in fields such as science, literature, arts, and international relations. The order is divided into several classes, with the Grand Cross being the highest. Since 1975, the order is no longer awarded to Swedish citizens for ordinary merit, but can be awarded to foreigners or for special merits. The monarch of Sweden is the Grand Master of the order.
