Nordfriisk

Nordfriisk, also known as North Frisian, is a West Germanic language spoken in the North Frisia region of Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, and parts of southern Denmark. It is part of the Frisian language group, which also includes West Frisian and Saterland Frisian. Historically, North Frisian was spoken by a larger population, but its use has declined due to various socio-political factors.

The language is characterized by a complex system of dialects, which can differ significantly from one another, sometimes to the point of mutual unintelligibility. Major dialect groups include Wiedingharde, Bökingharde, Karrharde, and Goesharde, each with its own specific linguistic features. Despite these differences, there are commonalities that unite them as North Frisian.

In recent decades, efforts have been made to preserve and revitalize Nordfriisk. This includes language education in schools, the publication of literature, and media in the language. Organizations like the Nordfriisk Institut play a crucial role in these preservation efforts. While still considered an endangered language by UNESCO, there is a growing awareness and appreciation for its cultural significance. The number of speakers is estimated to be relatively small, with varying figures depending on the definition of fluency and the specific dialect.
